C. Baldwin Grand Opening Celebration

The Background

The former DoubleTree by Hiton, a hotel perched at the intersection of Downtown, Midtown, and Buffalo Bayou, was scheduled to re-open in October 2019, as a Brookfield property renamed the C. Baldwin. The property’s new identity is a tribute to Charlotte Baldwin Allen, wife of the acknowledged founder of the City of Houston Augustus Allen. If you’ve never heard of Mrs. Allen you’re not alone. The renovation project was designed to change all that, and much more: It created an opportunity to see both the property and Mrs. Allen – the real founder of the City of Houston – with fresh eyes and a new appreciation.

The Opportunity

Enter BMF, a global experiential agency specializing in crafting amazing launch parties. BMF is the perfect partner to inspire a fresh vision of something people think they already know. They were excited to craft an event spotlighting Charlotte Baldwin Allen – NOT her husband Augustus – as the true force behind the evolution of Houston. The opening of the C. Baldwin hotel invited visitors to explore the contributions that Charlotte Baldwin Allen – and many other women – made to the history of Texas.

The Solution

Obviously, there was much to celebrate.

Every component of the event had to be amazing, so BMF turned to Staging Solutions for custom design and fabrication of activation pieces used throughout the space, including:

LED Signage

Hotel Exterior Signage

Multiple 8' Fern Walls

8' Custom Bars

The stage, bars, and DJ booths mimic the rich wood paneling and steel accents visible throughout the lobby. All of the pieces blend seamlessly into the multi-million dollar renovation, and align with the property’s inspired aesthetic highlighting the contributions of prominent Texas women. Each piece features the hotel’s iconic typography, as does the custom signage – both LED and metal – that was crafted for both indoors and out. Topiary walls brought the front facade’s most impressive feature – a verdant wall of greenery over the main entrance – into the lobby space.  LED signage wrought in brilliant pink pays homage not only to the women who are honored in the space, but also to those who designed it, work in it, and will no doubt enjoy it in the decades to come. “You Made It,” indeed!

The pieces provided a flawless environment for the evening’s activities, entertainers, and guests, while accommodating the event budget. The end result was a beautifully-crafted celebration that welcomed over 2,000 guests, including the McNeese State Marching Band, the Houston-based band The Suffers, and an A List of Houston celebrities. Throughout the evening DJ booths featured The Dolls and Houston’s DJ Shanté. The evening culminated in a blow-out concert by 1970s disco icon Gloria Gaynor.
